Abstract

This study examined how much aesthetic sensationalism affects public trust, professional responsibility and ethical standards in modern online journalism. The quantitative research methodology was to determine the relationship between the ethical behaviour and the aesthetics presentation in media work. Working journalists in Delta State, Nigeria were surveyed using a survey research design in order to collect standardized responses. The population consisted of journalists from prints, broadcast and internet media outfits that were members of the accredited media chapels under the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). Multi stage sampling technique was used to select 400 journalists. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire with Likert-Scale items measuring important constructs such as ethical standards, sensational practices, visual exaggeration and perceived professionalism . The results showed how far aesthetic sensationalism affected the ethics of online journalism. This study also found a high occurrence of sensational storytelling and visual exaggeration, which undermines professional accountability and public confidence in media outlets. The study suggests that more rigorous enforcement of ethical standards, ongoing professional development and increased editorial oversight can foster responsible and dependable online journalism.
